Jit Bahadur Gurung
my guide, my friend

This blog is to inform those who know Jit of how is getting along and what he’s been up to.

If you don’t know him, read on, for this is the story of a true gentleman with a heart of gold. I’ve trekked so many miles with this guy, laughed, cried, been in a few scrapes, rescued other trekkers, met his wife, kids and helped him to rebuilt his home after a catastrophic landslide destroyed it.  And that’s before the 2015 earthquake…

Jit Bahadur Gurung

Jit is a Nepalese Guide, but no ordinary one. For such a gentle man, he makes an immediate impact on anyone who has the pleasure of trekking with him. He is just the complete Guide who I would trust with my life with an incredibly infectious smile.

We met in the early 2000’s when I first started trekking in Nepal. We became friends as I returned time and time again and he subsequently became the king pin for all of my treks there as I formed and developed Travel and Trek.

He lives in Gorkha, the area devastated by the 2015 earthquake. Prior to that big earthquake, Jit’s home had already been destroyed by a landslide several years earlier and with the help of generous donations from those who knew him, were able to supply him with enough money to rebuild his home.

In the early days I used to rock up in Nepal with a fist full of dollars and together with Jit, we used to pull the whole thing together, facilitating several treks in succession. We went through some amazing times including being caught in the crossfire when the Maoists were still active!

He seemed to know everyone and there wasn’t much he couldn’t achieve.

From a business point of view, I quickly realised that I needed a more permanent and robust support system on the ground in Kathmandu/Pokhara if something went wrong. Jit was/is a freelance Guide and he couldn’t do that, sadly. Thankfully, he was already branching out developing the Manaslu region, forging routes and educating the tea houses in how to deal with trekkers. So he had a good permanent job, close to home. I was pleased.

Jit is a free spirit, not the type of guide who would fit into a rigid structure of employment such as a Nepalese trekking company, and I wouldn’t want to see him in that position either. It’s just not Jit.

He’s still out there, a bit of guiding, a bit of development work, a bit of this, bit of that and still with the biggest smile on his face like he’s won the lottery. That’s Jit.

I make a point of meeting Jit every time I travel to Nepal and a couple of years ago, I met Jit in Kathmandu and we sat and talked for ages as usual. When he left, I watched him go as if it was the last time I’d see him and a little tear fell away, as if I knew. I get the odd email but technology is not his strong point. And then he popped up on WhatsApp video whilst I was driving in London just a few weeks ago. My eyes had a classic double take and I couldn’t stop the car fast enough!! Jit was never in the digital age, especially in such a place like Nepal but there he suddenly was, smiling as ever, just calling to say hello. I think my smile matched his!

I am fortunate. I trek with our Guides time and time again in the numerous countries that we operate in and they are all very good. But no-one quite like Jit Bahadur Gurung.

Jit and his family are well and sends his best wishes to anyone who remembers him. How can anyone forget Jit; you can just see him smiling right now ….
