Project Description

HUSKY SAFARI ADVENTURE, NORWAY

HUSKY SAFARI ADVENTURE, NORWAY

Become a Husky ‘Musher’. This is no ordinary Dog Sled adventure

This a real adventurous Husky experience, through varied and challenging terrain (not wholly flat, which makes it far more interesting!). It is designed to be a stress free enjoyable adventure across the heartland of the nomadic Sami people and you are highly likely to come across herds of reindeer and the ‘reindeer’ people.

Our designer Husky Lodge is home to between 50 and 60 Alaskan Husky sled dogs. They are highly trained for long-distance racing, expeditions and tours. During your trip you will learn to care for your team of Huskies, learning to inspect and treat their paws, monitor their condition, take care of their feeding and learning how to harness them in the correct order, according to their hierarchy. These amazing creatures are incredibly friendly and loving and during the safari you will start to understand why these dogs became such a dependable asset to local people.

The safari covers between 20km and 50km a day, flying across the pristine crisp white ‘dry’ snow and camping either in the wilderness or in basic mountain cabins on the Finnmark Plateau.

The sense of freedom and open space is immense; no roads, no people, no fixed times to adhere to. The safari is completely self contained. No experience is required however a general level of fitness, concentration and balance is required. Your Guides will teach you everything you need to know, from the tents, cooking equipment, how to handle to Huskies and how to ice fish (dinner!) so this is a very educational trip too. The final Lodge is awesome.

Sufficient time is allocated in the superb hand built Lodge to allow you to enjoy this environment. Snow shoes and other such equipment is provided free of charge.

Suitable for Kids?

Absolutely. They don’t have to be on the back of the sleds, they can sit in the sled of the Guide. The cold is clearly an issue with young children but the reindeer skins are provided for excellent protection.

Two sleds are put onto the back of these dog teams so even if an adult finds this difficult either physically or through balance, we can adjust to put the adult into the sled, no problem.

An amazing Husky Safari experience in the Finnmark wilderness.

Takes place in Norway; travel in through Finland.

Day 1, Depart London, Arrive Ivalo (Finland)

Depending on your arrival time into Ivalo, you will either transfer to the hotel in Ivalo (late arrival), or transfer straight to the Husky Lodge by taxi.

Day 2, Preparation and Training Day

If you are in Ivalo, after breakfast, you will transfer by taxi to the Husky Lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you will have the chance to explore the lodge and spend time with the huskies. Your guide will take the opportunity to check through your kit and ensure you are prepared for your adventure, kitting you out with snow suits & boots and allowing you time to make any final preparations needed.

Tonight, after dinner the Guide will brief you on the tour. BLD

Day 3, Husky Safari

Today starts with a traditional Norwegian breakfast during which you will prepare your picnic lunch. Then it’s time to prepare the sled and organise your team of huskies. You will learn the basics of caring for your team and have training on the basics of ‘mushing’. Once ready, you will head straight out on your safari and before you know it, you will be in teams of two, driving your own sled with a team of eight huskies in front!

We spent the night at our wilderness camp, hidden in the wilderness or depending on the route taken, a mountain cabin on the Finnmark plateau. (Depending on weather conditions and time of year).

Your first job at the end of the day will be caring for you huskies and settling them for the night before enjoying your evening meal which will be prepared for you by your guide. BLD

Day 4, Husky Safari

Once you have prepared your huskies and yourself for the day, it will be a day of varied terrain and frozen lakes, all of which are winter pasture for Sami reindeer. Stopping for an enjoyable lunch break around an open fire, your guide will enjoy sharing his knowledge and experience of the local wildlife.

We once again you will spend the night either camping or in a mountain cabin, and once your huskies are settled, it’s time enjoying another chance to view the Northern Lights.

Each day you will work alongside the guide to prepare camp and look after your equipment. Your guide prepares wonderful meals however they will welcome your help, especially clearing up and preparing your lunch for the following day. BLD

Day 5, Husky Safari, return to Husky Lodge

It’s a long stretch back to the Husky Lodge on a different route through beautiful landscapes and the chance to see wild moose which usually stay in the valleys during wintertime.

Once back at the Lodge, it’s time to settle your husky’s back into their home before heading for a very welcome shower. You will then enjoy dinner, gathered in the warm atmosphere of the main lodge, selecting and share tales of the last few days. BLD

Day 6, Husky Lodge

We allow a spare day today for you to enjoy some free time at the Husky Lodge and make use of the free snow shoes! BLD

Day 7, Husky Lodge – transfer to Ivalo after Lunch

key information

It’s All In The Detail

Passport – Must be valid for the duration of your visit. Information source is the FCO Travel Advice Norway.

Visa – No visa is required for Norway.

Flight Tickets – paper tickets are rare these days; all e-tickets. All you need to check in is your passport and PNR Reference No (which we provide you with). From that your boarding passes are provided. We either provide your boarding passes (by email) or you check in on line yourself (or at the airport).

Travel Insurance – Mandatory on our trips. We will ask for proof of cover. We do not sell travel insurance. Go to our Information webpage for our unbias advice and tips.

Whilst this trek is graded as ‘Leisurely’, it does require some physical effort in taking care of the Huskies and setting up camp when tented, etc.. When travelling on the back of the sled (mushing), it’s more a matter of coordination and balance rather than strength. Learning to relax and moving with the sled is as much a part of this as any physical strength.

You are out for 3 days, 2 nights travelling through arctic wilderness. The temperatures will be sub zero (it’s a matter of how low) and you also have the ‘wind chill’ to consider.

After booking, you will be asked to complete an Emergency Details Form which will include your medical history. If we have any doubts about your ability to take part in the challenge, we may ask you to provide a letter of fitness from your GP, therefore we would recommend that if you have any concerns, you speak to your GP prior to booking.

Fitness Concerns? – Call us on 01529 488159 or 07725 943108

Food

  • All meals supplied from Day 1 dinner (assuming you arrive at the Lodge on Day 1) to Day 8 b’fast.

Please inform us if you are vegetarian.

Accommodation

  • Ivalo – good quality airport hotel, twin share, same sex.
  • Husky Lodge – high quality designer Lodge, twin share, same sex.
  • On expedition – high quality tents designed for the environment and/or basic mountain cabins.

Our default flights are:

International Flights – London (usually Heathrow or Gatwick) – Ivalo (Finland). One stop.

Depending on your arrival time into Ivalo, you will either be transferred directly to the Lodge in Norway OR use an overnight hotel in Ivalo and transferred the following day. Either way, the accommodation and transfers are included.

London not convenient? – Other UK regional airport options are possible to Oslo. We appreciate the potential inconvenience of London if you live far away. Whilst using regional airports may attract supplements due to higher flight costs, that cost may be offset by the cost and time of travelling to London. Please ask for advice on 01529 488159.

The advice here is given in good faith from trusted sources; we are not medical professionals. Check with your Medical Practice if you are up to date with the primary courses.

Vaccinations:

FREE Vaccinations – the following are usually FREE on the NHS as they are considered the greatest risk if brought into the country:
Cholera, Diphtheria, Polio, Tetanus and Hep A (be aware some of those are combined vaccinations).

You need very little spending money on this trip, save for any time you wish to spend in the town.

Norwegian Kroner (NKR) is readily available in the UK prior to travel. Be aware Ivalo is in Finland and they use the Euro.

There are ATM’s available.

We recommend either carrying additional spare cash OR a debit/credit card as a back up. The latter (credit card) should always be carried for emergencies.

Further generic information on subjects such as travel insurance and high altitude trekking can be found on our Information webpage.
