Project Description

KILIMANJARO to COAST
BIKE RIDE

KILIMANJARO
to COAST
BIKE RIDE

An outstanding 430 km bike ride through rural Tanzania. No tourists out here!

Our Kilimanjaro to Coast Bike Ride starts at the base of Kilimanjaro and rides right out to the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the rural Tanzania, through the coffee plantations, National Parks and right to Pangani on the Indian Ocean coast, some 430 km away.

  • Glorious Tanzanian rural countryside – all 430km of it
  • Finish on the Indian Ocean coast – Pangani
  • All meals and drinking water, local camping
  • Excellent support: Guide, mechanics and 4×4 support vehicle
  • Full support pre-trip

You get a very warm welcome on this Kilimanjaro to Coast Bike Ride; few tourists go this way and certainly not on bikes!

This bike ride will take you through sisal, fruit and banana plantations as you head out into the bush towards Lake Jipe which borders Kenya. Skirting both Tsavo West National Park and Mkomazi National Park the cycle takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery as you circumnavigate the North and South Pare Mountains as well as the spectacular Usumbara Mountains in the West.

Daily distances are varied with the occasional long day and you have full maintenance support (including spare bikes). We camp in local villages and where possible, primary school playing fields. It is a huge bonus of this Kilimanjaro to Coast bike ride that the camping fees go directly to the local communities and primary schools. You will receive a very warm welcome; the children love a selfie and the odd game of football!

Your final destination, Pangani, perfectly sums up the Swahili spirit of the Tanzanian coast. It offers the ideal compromise between the Indian Ocean coast, the Swahili village and a genuinely peaceful environment not influenced by mass tourism. Pangani has some history but now it’s mainly a fishing town where you will enjoy clean beaches where endangered Green Turtles breed, historic sites and coral reefs.

From that your boarding passes are provided. We either provide your boarding passes (by email) or you check in on line yourself (or at the airport).

Travel Insurance – Mandatory on our trips. We will ask for proof of cover. We do not sell travel insurance. Go to our Information webpage for our unbias advice and tips.

Whilst this Kilimanjaro to Coast Bike Ride is challenging, the riding is not technical and you have full back up with you allowing you to come off the bike if required.

The bike ride covers a min of 40km per day, ranging up to 137km on the longest day. Ideally, you should be used to being in the saddle for a significant number of hours per day. The riding surfaces are generally dirt tracks and whilst the starting altitude is approx 950m (Moshi) and it drops to sea level, it is certainly not all downhill!

As part of the booking process, you will be asked about any relevant issues of your medical history. If we have any doubts about your ability to take part in the challenge, we may ask you to provide a letter of fitness from your GP, therefore we would recommend that if you have any concerns, you speak to your GP prior to booking.

Food

  • B’fast is supplied in hotels, full board on the ride.
  • Unlimited drinking water on the ride.
  • Breakfasts are usually buffet style, lunches vary depending on the route that day and evening meals are 3 courses.
  • There are water/snack stops en route.
  • Tea/coffee/biscuits are severed on arrival at the campsite.
  • The food is of excellent quality and there is no lacking quantity; you won’t go hungry!

  • On the bike ride – tents twin share basis, same sex. Two people in what is a 3 person tent.
  • Declared couples (ie married) will be paired together.
  • If there is an odd number, someone gets lucky with sole occupation at no additional cost.
  • Sole occupation entitles you to sole occupation of all hotel rooms plus a tent to yourself.

Our default flights are London Heathrow (LHR) – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We use a variety of high quality airlines using one stop (there are no direct flights to JRO from London).

The return will depart from Dar Es Salaam (DAR), Tanzania back into LHR.

Included luggage allowance in the aircraft hold is a min of 20kg but more commonly 23 – 30kg.

London not convenient?

Other regional airport options are possible. We appreciate the potential inconvenience of London if you live far away. Whilst using regional airports may attract supplements due to higher flight costs, that cost may be offset by the cost and time of travelling to London. Please ask for advice.

The advice here for this Kilimanjaro to Coast Bike Ride is given in good faith from trusted sources; we are not medical professionals. Check with your Medical Practice if you are up to date with the primary courses.

Vaccinations:

FREE Vaccinations – the following are usually FREE on the NHS as they are considered the greatest risk if brought into the country:
Cholera, Diphtheria, Polio, Tetanus and Hep A (be aware some of those are combined vaccinations).
Information source – http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1071.aspx?CategoryID=67

The others you are likely to have to pay for.

We recommend budgeting approx £300 – £400 for miscellaneous expenses during your trip. This includes meals not included in the itinerary, drinks, supplementary snacks and tips etc. but this amount does depend on your personal spending habits and your wish to buy souvenirs.

We recommend either carrying additional spare cash OR a debit/credit card as a back up. The latter (credit card) should always be carried for emergencies.

Tanzania’s currency is the Tanzanian Schilling. The currency is not on the open market and therefore you will not be able to obtain any prior to arrival. Their second currency is the US$. If you deal in US$, you will pay considerably more than you would using local currency.

You can change your cash at the local banks or use the local ATMs.

Further generic information on subjects such as travel insurance and high altitude trekking can be found on our Information webpage.
