Private Trek or Group Trek:
The Pros and Cons
The Pros and Cons
We explode the myth that booking a private adventure, as opposed to group, is expensive.
Travel and Trek offers 2-person adventures for the same price as a group adventure.
When you are planning a bucket-list adventure holiday – whether it’s climbing to Africa’s rooftop on Mount Kilimanjaro, biking through Tanzania’s wildlife corridors, or trekking over dramatic high passes of the Himalayas – one of the first decisions you face is how you want to travel.
Should you join a scheduled group tour, or book a private departure?
In the adventure industry, this choice usually comes down to a compromise between your social preferences and your bank account. Conventional wisdom states that group tours are budget-friendly but rigid, while private tours are luxurious but incredibly expensive.
At Travel and Trek Limited, we have long believed that you should not have to compromise your dream holiday because of industry stereotypes. Here is an honest breakdown of the pros and cons of private vs. group adventures – and how we buck the trend.
The Group Trek: Shared Moments and New Friendships
For many adventurers, a trek or bike ride, or arctic expedition is as much about the people you meet as it is about the challenge or adventure.
The Pros:
- Built-in Camaraderie: There is a unique and unquestionable bond that forms when a group of strangers faces a physical challenge together. Sharing stories around a camp dinner table and cheering each other on during the tough part of any challenge creates lifelong friendships.
- Great for Solo Travellers: If you are travelling alone, joining a group provides an instant network of like-minded companions, ensuring you never feel isolated.
The Traditional ‘Cons’ (And How We Fixed Them):
- The Cancellation Stress: With most tour operators, group adventures (primarily treks or cycles) require a minimum number of participants to run. If the group doesn’t fill up, your trip could be cancelled with a few weeks to departure – leaving you with wasted holiday time. Full refunds are of no use now.
- Charity Challenges: This can often be worse if it’s a charity challenge, when min numbers tend to be higher. Your time is not only lost but so too all of that fundraising effort. See what we can often do for those that come to us when a Charity Challenge company has cancelled their challenge.
Our Solution
We offer a 2-pax guaranteed departure for the vast majority of our treks and cycles, including charity challenges. The moment two of you book, that trip is 100% locked in. The advertised price is exactly what you pay, and your departure is guaranteed whether more people join the group or it’s just the two of you. Our Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro treks are two classic examples of our 2-pax guaranteed departure trips.

Reaching the roof of Africa is a high-charged emotion in a group.
The Private Trek: Ultimate Flexibility and Personal Pacing
A private trip is designed completely around your individual needs, making it a highly personalised way to experience the adventure.
The Pros:
- Go at Your Own Pace: In a standard group, the pace or progress is understandably matched to that of the slower people. On a private trip, you dictate the tempo. If you want to stop for an hour to take photos or push on for an early finish, it’s all yours to decide.
- Tailored to You: Private adventures are ideal for families, couples celebrating milestones (like a honeymoon or a milestone birthday), or groups of friends who want an intimate, exclusive experience such as our Family Sahara. It also allows for highly personalised attention from your guides regarding pacing and dietary requirements.
- Adjusted Itineraries on the Fly: If something goes wrong during your trip, no problem. You can adjust the itinerary to get back on track, or change direction. There’s no-one else to consider.
- Flexible Dates: The advantages are there before you’ve taken your first step. Private trips can adjust the departure date to suit you.
The Traditional ‘Cons’ (And How We Explode It):
- The Premium Price Tag: In the travel world, ‘private’ is usually code for ‘expensive.’ Most companies charge massive premiums or single/double supplements to run a private trip.
Our Solution
We have completely eliminated the cost barrier. At Travel and Trek Limited, private trips cost absolutely no more. Provided the min number for the trip is met*, and you want to lock it down as ‘just us’, you can. No hidden fees, no added costs, and no premium markups.
* There are some exceptions to the 2-pax guarantee, they are mainly the Arctic trips.

Private small groups can dictate everything about their trip: pace, stop points, even change the itinerary where necessary.
The Choice Is Yours: Experience vs. Experience
Because we have removed the financial penalty of going private and eliminated the cancellation risks of going group, your decision is no longer dictated by your budget or fear of cancellation.
Instead, your choice becomes entirely about the kind of experience you want to have:
- Choose a Group Trek if you want a vibrant, social atmosphere, love meeting new people from different walks of life, and want to experience the shared team spirit of a group achievement.
- Choose a Private Trek if you want complete control over your pacing, an adjusted itinerary (to that advertised), a flexible itinerary (on the fly), maximum privacy, or want to share a deeply personal milestone exclusively with your chosen favourite people.
